Tasting Notes

Vinous 90+

(from vines between 60 and 90 years of age): Palish red. Pure but reticent aromas of raspberry, flowers, spices and pepper are currently blocked by SO2. Dark berry, spice and chocolate flavors show a firm mineral edge (there’s some limestone at the top of this vineyard) and little in the way of easy sweetness. This firmly built wine finishes with slightly tough tannins and very good length. [Stephen Tanzer, 01/03/2012]

The 2009 Vosne-Romanee La Colombiere is magical in the way it caresses the palate from start to finish. The fruit is totally seamless, fragrant and silky. La Colombiere was the first vineyard Liger-Belair brought back to the estate. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. Louis-Michel Liger-Belair is one of the emerging superstars in Burgundy. Over the last decade or so he has gradually taken back vineyards that his family had previously leased. The collection of vineyards would make anyone’s mouth water, although it is only a small portion of the holdings the family once owned. These are some of the most effortless, graceful Burgundies readers will find. The house style is all about elegance. The vineyards were converted to biodynamics starting in 2008. Work in the cellar is equally non-interventionalist. The 2009 harvest started on September 12. The fruit was 100% destemmed and all of the wines were aged in 100% new oak. Some of the 2009s were bottled by early February, while the rest of the wines were scheduled to be bottled in late March. Importer: Grand Crus Selections, New York, NY; tel. Pale ruby. Some autumnal mulch on the nose. Very fresh with an undertow of extremely sweet red fruits. Red currants. Charming but almost as though there is some unfermented sugar in it! [01/11/2011]

Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020
