The 2019 Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru is destined to be much less controversial than its 2018 predecessor, as Bouchard was able to determine the date of harvest this year. Wafting from the glass with notes of cherries, woodsmoke, dried flowers, licorice and loamy soil, it’s full-bodied, bright and tightly wound, with real concentration and a long, precise finish.

Cask sample. Surprisingly pale garnet. Pretty light nose. Not that representative of this climat. Much lighter than usual. Lots of polished tannin. Almost disconcerting it’s so unlike most Clos de Bèzes! There is admittedly quite a bit of tannin and substantial general grip on the finish but not that much weight or fruit in the mid-palate. The Clos de Vougeot seems much more successful to me. Lively and juicy – but Clos de Bèze…? But perhaps I am being too inflexible and the wine will continue to gain weight and complexity with time.
Anticipated maturity: 2026-2043
