Tasting Notes

Vinous 88

The 2019 Mondot has a fragrant bouquet of raspberry and cranberry, pure and uncomplicated, with a light marine scent surfacing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a little chewiness on the entry. Sappy red fruit in situ, veins of black fruit laced with sea salt and black pepper towards the finish. Fine, but it will need 18-24 months in bottle. [Neal Martin, 06/15/2020]

Anticipated maturity: 2023-2028

Robert Parker 91

Mondot is 100% Merlot, coming this year from an entirely different set of blocks on the Troplong Mondot estate than the grand vin, consisting largely of limestone. So, essentially, it is not a second wine, in that it does not use any declassified fruit this year. With its own vineyard, per se, its own distinct personality really shines through this year. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Mondot drifts effortlessly out of the glass with notes of fresh red and black plums, mulberries and stewed cherries with touches of rose hip tea, cinnamon toast and dusty soil. The medium to full-bodied palate has a racy backbone of freshness lifting the perfumed red and black fruits in the mouth, with plush tannins accented by a compelling bit of chewiness, finishing long and spicy. [Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 06/13/2020]

JancisRobinson.com 17.5++

In 2019 de Gironde stopped doing malolactic conversion in barrel. Dark, brooding, more elemental than 2018. Plenty of impressive components, this needs a lot more time to come together. Ripe fruit, chunky tannins, spice and mint notes but still has that lovely freshness which seems a hallmark of recent vintages. (AWH) [03/10/2022]
