The 2020 La Violette has a high-toned nose with a heavy veneer of new oak. It is attractive in its own way, though it lacks a bit of personality. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, very ripe entry. Sweet, plush and heady, it boasts confit-like red fruit and lower acidity than its peers-enjoyable in and of itself but lacking the same intellect. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2020 La Violette has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and fragrant notes of chocolate-covered cherries, plum preserves and wild blueberries, followed by nuances of rose oil, sandalwood and ground cloves. The medium to full-bodied palate gives layer upon layer of black and blue fruit preserves, framed by silky tannins and lovely freshness, finishing with fantastic length and incredibly perfumed.

Tasted blind. Aroma of rich, charry sweetness but also a lift of dark-red fruits. Slightly harsh on the palate, the tannins and acidity kicking against each other. The tannins thickened by the oak. (JH)
