"The Domaine de Montille has a history that dates back to the 1730's. Hubert de Montille took over the domaine in 1947 who skyrocketed the family to one of the top estates in Burgundy. Etienne de Montille grew up observing his fathers footsteps but has expanded its vineyards and transitioned the vineayrds to organic and biodynmaic farming. "Today's wines are fresh and elegant with terroir-transparency and a structure that is built to last." - Polaner Selections
VARIETAL: Pinot Noir
ORGANIC: Certified
BIODYNAMIC: Practicing
VINEYARD: One of the most celebrated climats of Volnay, Champans is a steep parcel with a diversity of soils from the top to the bottom of the vineyard. The name of the vineyard is derived from two words "Champ" (field) and "pans" (old dialect for "pente" - slope).
SOIL: The top of the parcel along the D973 is chalky with a light brown soil whereas the lower section of the parcel is more clay dominant with a darker brown and red-hued soil.
VINIFICATION: 50% whole cluster fermentation, 50% destemmed. Regarding sulfur, reds have the following: 45-65 mg/l total SO2, 20-25 mg/l free SO2.
AGING: Aged 14-18 months in barrel (30% new), then assembled to age additional months in stainless steel.
PRODUCTION: 4400 bottles
This major Volnay 1er Cru is a fresh and vibrant wine marked by red fruits (cherries), a fully body, and a tannic structure that eschews rigidity. On the palate is it ample and structured and gains real elegance over time.
“Here too moderate reduction renders the nose difficult to assess. The relatively delicate and refined middle weight flavors possess no lack of punch that carries over to the youthfully austere, complex and sneaky long finish that is quite tightly wound so patience advised.” *Outstanding*
